Carefree Chuck Connor est sur son chemin vers l'Ouest et arrête de voir un vieil ami et ses quatre garçons. Lorsque son hôte est tué dans un accident de cheval Chuck se rend compte qu'il doit prendre soin de la famille. Ils ont frappé la route et il prend un emploi dans un ranch, mais il doit garder les enfants cachés comme son patron déteste les enfants. Il y a également des tensions avec le ranch voisin, et quand une fille sur la course de son oncle méchant rejoint la famille se demande sans préavis Chuck ce qu'il a fait pour mériter tout cela.
