Le mystère des oiseaux géants
Autruches africaines, rhéas d’Amérique du Sud, émeus et casoars d’Océanie : comment sont apparus ces gigantesques oiseaux coureurs à la morphologie très similaire, historiquement réunis dans le groupe des "ratites" ? Et surtout, comment ont-ils pu se répartir aux quatre coins du globe alors même qu’ils sont incapables de voler ? Longtemps, les théories sur le sujet n’ont pas manqué – tectonique des plaques, œufs dérivant d’une île à l’autre, ancêtre commun migrateur… Mais les progrès de l’analyse génétique ont permis aux paléontologues de donner à ce mystère une réponse plus surprenante encore, qui pourrait bien réécrire l’histoire.
