John Slade est arrêté et envoyé en prison pour possession de drogue. Des hommes lui proposent de l'en sortir si il libère un photographe, Frank Morris, prisonnier des sandinistes au Nicaragua. Pour mener à bien sa mission, il va faire équipe avec Marta, une femme du pays. Mais il est capturé, torturé, et découvre qu'il a été trahi...
