Armé de sa guitare et de ses discours enflammés, Bo Gillis fait campagne pour le poste de gouverneur dans un Etat du Sud des Etats-Unis. Il s'éprend d'une ancienne prostituée, Ada, et l'épouse en dépit des réticences de son conseiller politique, Sylvester Marin. A peine mariée, Ada se révèle d'une grande aide. Bo est élu. Ada n'a de cesse, alors, de lui prouver que les procédés douteux auquel Sylvester a recours, notamment pour torpiller son rival, peuvent nuire à sa réputation. Bo refuse de l'écouter. A la suite d'un accident de la route, il remet ses pouvoirs entre les mains de son tortueux conseiller. Ada le met à nouveau en garde...
