Rui était en vélo un soir, lorsqu'elle fut renversée par une voiture qui prit la fuite. Elle perdit la vue à la suite de ce terrible accident. Wataru, lui, est passionné de parapente mais est traumatisé à l'idée de conduire un deux-roues depuis l'accident de moto qu'il a eu l'an passé avec son pote Hiroya. Après leur rencontre dans des circonstances incongrues, Rui propose à Wataru de devenir son "chien d'aveugle". Il accepte et petit à petit, il l'aide à sortir de sa coquille et à surmonter son traumatisme. Mais ils sont vite rattrapés par leurs passés respectifs et découvrent que le destin peut être bien cruel parfois…

Il rencontre ensuite un autre coureur d'élite, Kakeru, qui a également quitté la course, mais qui a été provoqué par un différend. Leur rencontre inspire les deux jeunes hommes à courir à nouveau, Haiji choisissant le légendaire "Hakone Ekiden" (course de relais longue distance). La course nécessite une équipe de 10 membres alors Haiji et Kakeru en recrutent 8 autres (dont certains n'ont jamais couru auparavant). Au sein de ce groupe improbable de coureurs, un lien se forme à travers leur entraînement et la conviction qu'ils peuvent accomplir l'impossible.
