Pendant plusieurs années, un brave soldat consciencieux combat dans de nombreuses batailles. Mais lorsque la paix est conclue, il est congédié sans qu'on ne lui accorde la moindre pension. Il va alors trouver le roi pour souligner cette injustice. Mais Sa Majesté, qui a besoin de beaucoup d'argent pour bâtir un magnifique palais, le congédie. L'ancien soldat part alors à la recherche d'un travail mais ne trouve rien. Vers le soir, il s'engage dans un bois et se dirige vers la lumière d'une maisonnette dans laquelle vit une sorcière...
