Chine, XIIe siècle. Dans quelques heures va se tenir une rencontre diplomatique de la plus haute importance entre Qin Hui, Chancelier de la dynastie Song, et une délégation Jin de haut niveau. Or voilà que le diplomate Jin dépêché sur place est assassiné et la lettre destinée à l’Empereur dérobée. Le Chancelier demande alors au caporal Zhang Da, escorté par le commandant en second Sun Jun, de ramener la précieuse missive avant le lever du soleil.
