Affaiblie par une relation douloureuse avec M. de Guise, qu’elle soupçonne de la désirer plus que de l’aimer, Catherine de Chartres suit les conseils de sa mère et épouse un riche médecin, Jacques de Clèves. Habitués aux mondanités et férus de spectacles, les nouveaux époux assistent à une représentation intimiste du musicien portugais Pedro Abrunhosa, qui devient un proche et dont Catherine va vite s’éprendre.
