Un crime passionnel ou un acte de trahison ?
Dans un accès de rage, le Secrétaire d’État à la Défense David Brice assassine sa maîtresse. Pour étouffer l'affaire, l'adjoint de Brice crée la couverture idéale : inventer de toutes pièces un tueur - un espion russe - puis enjoint le commandant Tom Farrel à retrouver sa trace. Mais par un fait du hasard, Farell est lui aussi lié à la victime... et les indices qu'il découvre l'accusent du meurtre.
